Informs the Markhams that the book will not be ready for two to three months; is convinced that the book will not sell, since she would not refine the poems; want the book to be a memoir for Gerda's friends; likes the idea of a two volume set.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
